A meeting was held to discuss the anomalies regarding the new pay scale revision of Lecturers on 04.02.09. The response to the meeting was very poor and very few lecturers attended the meeting. However, the participants suggested representing to the UGC and MHRD for reduction of the anomalies in the pay scale of Lecturers/Asst Prof. and reduction in the pay gap between the Assoc Prof. and Asst Prof. They also suggested that promotion to the post of Reader be reduced to just 5 years rather than 12 years. MANUUTA is exploring the ways and means to represent these suggestions to the above authorities. MANUUTA is also waiting to receive further clarity regarding pay scales from the UGC so that some steps can be initiated.

Dilip Kumar to be conferred honorary doctorate by Urdu University
Hyderabad : Thespian Dilip Kumar will be conferred with honorary doctorate by Maulana Azad National Urdu University here next month. Kumar, one of the greatest actors of Indian cinema, will be conferred the honour at the annual convocation of the university to be held on Feb 21.
India's former ambassador to the United States Abid Hussain, eminent Urdu writer and scholar Gopi Chand Narang and well-known Urdu novelist Jeelani Bano will also receive the honorary degrees, said a statement issued by the university here Tuesday.
Sukhadeo Thorat, Chairman, University Grants Commission will be the chief guest and will deliver the convocation address while Syeda Saiyidain Hameed, the chancellor of Urdu University will preside over the convocation. 
The Urdu University was established in 1998 by an act of parliament as a central university to promote and develop the Urdu language, provide higher, technical and vocational education in the Urdu medium and to provide focus on women's education.

MANUUTA FIRST GBM - MINUTES AND RESOLUTIONS
MINUTES OF THE FIRST GENERAL BODY MEETING
OF MANUUTA HELD ON 13.01.2009
The First GBM of MANUUTA was held on 13th January 2009 on the steps of DDE building. The meeting started at 3.30 pm after the required quorum as per constitution was ensured. The meeting was presided over by the Vice President of the Association, Dr.Tariq Masoodi, as the President expressed his inability to attend the meeting.
The meeting discussed the amendments proposed by the Legal Advisor of MANUU and approved the same with certain modifications. Articles III, IV, IX and XVI were discussed and the amendments were adopted with full consensus and the same are incorporated in the MANUUTA constitution under the heading ‘Amended latest by 13.01.2009’.
Article III. MEMBERSHIP
Membership of the Association shall be open to all teachers of the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) appointed by the University only, at the Headquarter, at constituent Regional Centres and Colleges of the University all over the country.
Article IX. POWERS AND FUNCTIONS OF THE OFFICE BEARERS OF THE ASSOCIATION
The General Secretary shall be the ex-officio chief executive of the association and shall be entitled to receive correspondence from the Maulana Azad National Urdu University or any other person or persons. Correspondence with the General Secretary shall be deemed as the correspondence with the Maulana Azad National Urdu University Teachers’ Association.
Article XVI.
The Association is formed with the main purpose of promoting democratic functioning of the University and teachers’ participation in the decision-making process. The person nominated by the Executive Committee of the Association shall take part in any of the decision making bodies of the university and decision taken by such representative shall be deemed as giving consent or giving concurrence to any decision taken by the University and by the Maulana Azad National Urdu University Teachers’ Association, subject to the approval of the Executive Committee of MANUUTA and ratification of GBM of MANUUTA. Further the Association shall function in harmony with the University.
The GBM also passed the following four resolutions:
i. Resolution I
Resolution on Confirmation
The General Body of MANUUTA held on 13-01-2009 demands the confirmation of services of the faculty who have completed their required period for confirmation without further delay.
ii. Resolution II
Academic calendar
The General Body of MANUUTA held on 13-01-2009 feels that there should be an Academic Calendar prepared in advance before the beginning of the academic year, without which any sort of academic discipline cannot be brought in the University.
iii. Resolution III
Appointment of Dean, Academic Affairs
The General Body of MANUUTA held on 13-01-2009 impresses on the University authorities the need to appoint a Dean, Academic Affairs from the teaching cadre of the University. It also felt that there is a need to implement the policy of ‘one man-one post’ at all levels in the University.
iv. Resolution IV
Advance increments
The General Body of MANUUTA held on 13-01-2009 demands that the UGC rules regarding the advance increments for teachers holding M.Phil, Ph.D and professional degrees should be implemented with immediate effect.
The resolution on financial matters was postponed and the GBM authorised the Executive Committee of MANUUTA to decide the fee structure in its future meeting.
5. Vote of thanks was proposed by the Joint Secretary (Organising).
The above minutes and the resolutions passed have also been submitted to the Registrar for necessary action.

Bhiwandi gets 137 Urdu teachers in two weeks
Mumbai: Many unemployed professional Urdu teachers and guardians of Urdu medium school students in Bhiwandi have got a reason to be happy as Maharashtra government appointed 137 Urdu teachers in the last two weeks for the schools run by Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation.
The appointment of the teachers in a short span of December 29, 2008 and January 9, 2009 is seen as the outcome of constant efforts by the unemployed teachers' organization 'Bairozgar Primary Teachers Association'.
The association has expressed pleasure over the development. The president of the association Aslam Chhote Khan said, 'We are very happy that our efforts bore fruits and we have got employment. Our eight colleagues who joined hands with us in our movement, however, still remain unemployed due to overage. We have filed a writ petition for them in Mumbai High Court. The court will hear the case on January 20, and we expect a positive verdict.'
The organization has been demanding since December 2000 for the appointment of more Urdu teachers to balance the teacher-student ratio. With the new appointments, 'Now there is one teacher for 40 students,' Aslam says comparing it to the time when a large number of one thousand students had only one teacher.
On why he launched the movement he said: 'On one hand I saw that there were many DEds wandering unemployed while on the other I found that a school comprising three rooms in Shantinagar of Bhiwandi, for example, had only one teacher for one thousand students. It gave me inspiration to do something for the unemployed teachers and the future of the students,' told Aslam.
The latest appointment of teachers is a big success of the organization which conducted 22 hunger strikes in Azad Maidan, 8 in Bhiwandi itself and 2 in Pune under scorching sun and raining sky. Several teachers fell ill during the strike and had to be taken to hospitals in Mumbai and Bhiwandi. Due to the struggle of the association 246 Urdu teachers, including the new 137, have been appointed only in eight years. Earlier merely 10-15 Urdu teachers were appointed per year. Aslam said that before they started their struggle, only 210 Urdu teachers were appointed during 20 years.
The city of Bhiwandi, the largest power loom centre in India, is known as the 'Manchester of India' and it is located in West Maharashtra district of Thane. The city, which began to be inhabited by Maharashtrian and Kokani Muslims in the early twentieth century, has a population of 598,703 with Muslims in majority, as per the 2001 census. The average literacy rate of the city is 66%.
The Municipal Corporation of Bhiwandi runs 76 schools, of which 34 are Urdu medium. The rest of the schools are Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada medium. However, given the rise in population there is a need for opening more schools with necessary facilities in the city area. Aslam Khan told, 'There is an immediate need of at least 10 schools on big scale. The present schools are devoid of even basic amenities; electricity and suitable rooms etc.’
